Enter the total pack years for the span of cigarette use. Pack years equal the average number of packs smoked per day multiplied by the number of years of cigarette use. For example, if a person smokes two packs a day for 30 years, then the cigarette pack years equals 60. If a current smoker, calculate pack years from smoking start years to year of diagnosis. For example, patient is a current 2 packs per day smoker and diagnosed with cancer in 2024 at age of 72. Patient started smoking at age 18. Enter pack years as 108 (72-18 = 54 years smoking. 54(years) x 2(ppd) = 108.).
- Enter "0" if patient never smoked cigarettes.
- Enter "999" if the pack years of cigarette use is unknown.
The computer will automatically right justify digits at data entry.
