Definition of Menopause
Menopause is the permanent cessation of menses and includes a profound and permanent decrease in ovarian estrogen synthesis.
· Menopausal is usually a clinical diagnosis made after ≥12 months of amenorrhea. Natural menopause is experienced between ages 42-58 years.
· Surgical menopause occurs when the ovaries are removed (oophorectomy).
· Patients who underwent uterine ablations or hysterectomy without oophorectomy are not considered to be post-menopausal as the ovaries still remain intact.
Reasonable criteria for determining menopause in patients, when not specifically stated in the medical chart, include any of the following:
Prior bilateral oophorectomy
Age ≥ 60 years
Age < 60 with estradiol and FSH in the postmenopausal range.
